Fool Proof & Waterproof Bathroom
This drawing shows one of two methods of where the waterproofing in your bathroom is located. Most typically the waterproofing is located below the screed (as in the right side of the picture). Both methods rely heavily on the membrane because tile grout is porous, and the grout, tile glue and tile screed is saturated permanently with normal daily use. A pinhole in the membrane means big trouble, and regardless, capillary action draws moisture to every corner of your bathroom.Efflock provides another layer of protection by making the porous material water repellent for a drier, less mouldy and efflorescence free...

Architect's specification to include Efflock
"In ten years we are not going to talk about sustainability anymore, because it is going to be built into the core processes of architecture.”With its growth in the architecture industry, claiming a building is sustainable will eventually be like an architect getting up in front of an audience to “proudly proclaim how his buildings did not fall down.” - Architect Robert Stern, Dean of the Yale School of Architecture** Many builders and trades are now using Efflock, and many have suggested that we speak to architects and have Efflock included into their plans and specifications. We've taken that advice onboard and...

One of our selected stockists, Euro Abrasives in St Peters, has supplied 200 litres of Efflock to Casumo Constructions for a new multi storey residential complex in Mascot, near Sydney Airport. 'The Tempo' is a new residential complex in Botany Road, due for completion later this year. Efflorescence and water problems have caused major headaches in apartment buildings, as the current design trends feature rendered walls, planter boxes, and tiled balconies. Project manager for Casumo Constructions, Joe Metlage, enquired about Efflock late last month. "Like many builders, we've experienced problems with efflorescence in the past, and we are excited that...

Efflorescence in the UK
Efflorescence is clearly a problem the world over. Google has images and stories about efflorescence from all four corners of the globe. During a visit to the UK, we have seen efflorescence leaching from the face brickwork of many new buildings and brick fences. Common perception from most local tradesmen is that efflorescence comes from modern clay bricks. In some walls we have seen, the bricks do appear to produce salts which are seldom seen in Australia. However, for the most part, it does appear that porous mortar is the main culprit, or sometimes there is a combination of leaching from both...

Recommended Reading: Salt Attack & Rising Damp in Buildings
This publication is a great reference for builders and for anyone considering building or renovating - particularly for understanding rising damp in older houses. Salt can be an incredibly destructive compound, and understanding how salt damp behaves is the first step in designing a solution to control and prevent salt attack. Efflock is an ideal product to prevent the transport of salt throughout masonry. Efflock is excellent for use in new construction to prevent efflorescence and damp problems in tiled patios and wet areas, but can be used in many different applications such as render and brick mortar. It can sometimes however,...
